10 helpful tips for new moms experiencing the baby blues

by Gwen
(Serty)

This advice was given to me from my therapist friend and it was so helpful! The weeks following giving birth can be emotionally brutal and just know that you are not alone and it is so common to feel the "baby blue"

Here are 10 helpful tips for new moms experiencing the baby blues: (also be sure to reach out to your Dr. if you feel any form of depression)

1. Acknowledge Your Feelings: It's normal to feel overwhelmed or sad after childbirth. Accepting your emotions is the first step toward managing them.

2. Rest Whenever Possible: Sleep deprivation can intensify feelings of sadness. Nap when your baby naps and don’t hesitate to ask for help to get some rest.

3. Eat Well: Nutritious food can help stabilize your mood and energy levels. Try to maintain a balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins.

4. Stay Active: Light exercise, like walking, can boost your mood by increasing endorphin levels. Aim for short, gentle walks each day.

5. Talk About It: Share your feelings with someone you trust, whether it’s your partner, a friend, or a healthcare provider. Sometimes just talking can make a huge difference.

6. Join a Support Group: Connecting with other new moms can help you feel less isolated. Look for local or online support groups where you can share experiences and advice.

7. Limit Visitors: It’s okay to set boundaries with visitors. Too much company can be exhausting. Prioritize your well-being and limit interactions to what feels comfortable.

8. Set Realistic Expectations: Don’t pressure yourself to be perfect. Accept that it’s okay to have good days and bad days. Celebrate small victories.

9. Seek Professional Help if Needed: If your feelings of sadness persist or intensify, don’t hesitate to reach out to a mental health professional. Postpartum depression is common and treatable.

10. Make Time for Yourself: Even a few minutes of “me time” can be rejuvenating. Whether it’s reading a book, taking a bath, or enjoying a cup of tea, prioritize moments that bring you joy.

Remember, you’re not alone, and it's okay to ask for help.
