I have recently been studying the significance of birth flowers, birthstones and their meaning. I thought it was interesting to know what each flower and stone represents and thought I'd share my findings with all of you!
The 12 birth flowers, each associated with a particular month, along with
the meanings and significance of each birth flower:
1. January (Carnation or Snowdrop)
- Carnation: Love, fascination, and distinction. Different colors have different meanings; for instance, red carnations signify love, while white carnations represent pure love and good luck.
- Snowdrop: Hope and rebirth, often seen as a symbol of the end of winter and the coming of spring.
2. February (Violet or Primrose)
- Violet: Modesty, faithfulness, and virtue. Violets are also associated with spiritual wisdom and humility.
- Primrose: Youth, young love, and the feeling that you can't live without someone.
3. March (Daffodil or Jonquil)
- Daffodil: New beginnings, rebirth, and the arrival of spring. Daffodils symbolize hope, joy, and prosperity.
- Jonquil: Desire, sympathy, and the longing for affection.
4. April (Daisy or Sweet Pea)
- Daisy: Innocence, purity, and loyal love. Daisies also represent new beginnings and cheerfulness.
- Sweet Pea: Delicate pleasure, blissful pleasure, and departure. Often given as a thank you.
5. May (Lily of the Valley or Hawthorn)
- Lily of the Valley: Sweetness, humility, and the return of happiness. It also symbolizes purity and motherhood.
- Hawthorn: Hope, supreme happiness, and protection.
6. June (Rose or Honeysuckle)
- Rose: Love and passion. Different colors have different meanings; for example, red roses symbolize deep love, while yellow roses symbolize friendship.
- Honeysuckle: Bonds of love and devoted affection.
7. July (Larkspur or Water Lily)
- Larkspur: Positivity, dignity, and an open heart. Different colors signify different feelings; for example, pink larkspur represents fickleness, while white symbolizes a happy nature.
- Water Lily: Purity, enlightenment, and rebirth.
8. August (Gladiolus or Poppy)
- Gladiolus: Strength, integrity, and remembrance. They also symbolize infatuation.
- Poppy: Imagination, eternal sleep, and oblivion. Red poppies in particular symbolize remembrance and consolation.
9. September (Aster or Morning Glory)
- Aster: Wisdom, valor, and faith. They also symbolize love and patience.
- Morning Glory: Unrequited love and affection.
10. October (Marigold or Cosmos)
- Marigold: Warmth, passion, and creativity. They also symbolize sorrow and sympathy.
- Cosmos: Order, peace, and serenity. They represent harmony and modesty.
11. November (Chrysanthemum)
- Chrysanthemum: Joy, optimism, and long life. In some cultures, they symbolize death and are often used in funerals, while in others, they represent happiness and well-being.
12. December (Narcissus or Holly)
- Narcissus (Paperwhite): Rebirth and new beginnings. They also symbolize respect and honor.
- Holly: Protection, defense, and domestic happiness. It's often associated with Christmas and symbolizes good fortune and peace.
BIRTHSTONES AND MEANINGS:
1. January: Garnet
- Meaning: Protection, faith, love, and energy. Garnet is believed to bring health and peace and to ensure safe travel.
2. February: Amethyst
- Meaning: Calm, balance, and peace. Amethyst is associated with clarity of mind, protection, and the power to overcome addiction.
3. March: Aquamarine or Bloodstone
- Aquamarine: Courage, health, and confidence. It's said to protect sailors and to ensure a safe journey.
- Bloodstone: Strength, vitality, and healing. It is believed to purify the blood and protect against evil.
4. April: Diamond
- Meaning: Eternal love, strength, and clarity. Diamonds symbolize purity, innocence, and are often associated with love and commitment.
5. May: Emerald
- Meaning: Hope, renewal, and growth. Emeralds symbolize rebirth, love, and fertility and are believed to bring good fortune and youth.
6. June: Pearl, Alexandrite, or Moonstone
- Pearl: Purity, wisdom, and integrity. Pearls represent beauty, innocence, and are often associated with a calming effect.
- Alexandrite: Balance, joy, and good fortune. Alexandrite changes color in different light, symbolizing adaptability and good luck.
- Moonstone: Intuition, protection, and harmony. It is believed to bring emotional balance and calm.
7. July: Ruby
- Meaning: Passion, love, and courage. Rubies are associated with energy, vitality, and protection from misfortune and bad health.
8. August: Peridot or Spinel
- Peridot: Strength, prosperity, and healing. Peridot is believed to bring good luck, peace, and success.
- Spinel: Revitalization, energy, and protection. Spinel is thought to renew energy and ward off negativity.
9. September: Sapphire
- Meaning: Wisdom, royalty, and faithfulness. Sapphires symbolize truth, sincerity, and are believed to protect against envy and harm.
10. October: Opal or Tourmaline
- Opal: Creativity, inspiration, and hope. Opals are known for their beautiful play of colors and symbolize purity and innocence.
- Tourmaline: Healing, protection, and balance. Tourmaline is believed to promote understanding and self-confidence.
11. November: Topaz or Citrine
- Topaz: Strength, intelligence, and friendship. Topaz is thought to bring joy, generosity, and good health.
- Citrine: Happiness, abundance, and prosperity. Citrine is associated with positive energy and success.
12. December: Turquoise, Zircon, or Tanzanite
- Turquoise: Protection, wisdom, and good fortune. Turquoise is believed to bring peace and balance and to ward off negative energy.
- Zircon: Prosperity, honor, and wisdom. Zircon is thought to bring spiritual grounding and wisdom.
- Tanzanite: Transformation, calmness, and healing. Tanzanite is associated with spiritual growth and deepening intuition.
